Drawing

Considering Poly? We'd love to meet you!

Lower School drawing begins in Nursery and becomes a studio exercise in Kindergarten. Third graders begin the year building on their knowledge of portraiture. Working both two- and three-dimensionally, students focus on line, shape, proportion, and expression. They observe their reflections and draw what they see. When their drawings are complete, students transfer their images onto clay slabs and begin the challenging task of building their own likenesses in three dimensions.

In Middle School students take Art Studio. They keep sketchbooks and explore figure drawing. Teachers incorporate art history, art criticism, and connections to the curricula such as English, history, and science.

In Upper School, students take Advanced Drawing and explore how they can most effectively create a unique personal style. They work from still life and models, drawing under both natural and controlled conditions, and visit exhibitions at the Met and other museums.
